How to Sleep Better Between Night Shifts

How to Sleep Better Between Night Shifts

Sleeping between night shifts can feel unfairly difficult. You may be exhausted but wired, hungry but too tired to cook, and trying to sleep while the rest of the world gets louder and brighter.

The goal is to make daytime sleep easier to start, protect and repeat. Small changes to light, food, caffeine and routine can make a real difference over a run of shifts.

Control Light On The Way Home

Morning light can wake your body up just as you are trying to wind down. Sunglasses may help on the journey home where safe, and blackout curtains or an eye mask can make your sleep space more convincing.

Create A Short Wind-Down Routine

You do not need a complicated ritual. Keep it repeatable: wash, eat something light if needed, dim the lights, set your alarm and avoid getting pulled into bright screens or chores.

Set A Caffeine Cut-Off

Caffeine too close to sleep can make it harder to drop off. If you use caffeine during the shift, try to keep it earlier and taper it as your finish time approaches.

Eat Enough, But Keep It Light

Going to bed hungry can disturb sleep, but a heavy meal can be uncomfortable. Try a light, balanced snack such as yoghurt and oats, toast, eggs, soup or fruit.

Protect The Room

  • Keep the room cool and dark.
  • Use earplugs, white noise or a fan if daytime noise is a problem.
  • Tell others in the house when your protected sleep window is.
  • Put your phone on do-not-disturb if you can.

Do Not Chase Perfect Sleep

Some daytime sleeps will still be patchy. Try not to panic when that happens. A short extra nap before the next shift can help, and a consistent recovery routine after the final night can make the transition easier.

Support Recovery Between Shifts

Sleep works alongside food, hydration and movement. If you wake groggy, get some light, drink water and eat a proper meal before judging your energy for the next shift.
